How do I complete an annotation?
Answer
An annotation for an annotated bibliography will cover the following areas unless directed otherwise:
EVALUATE – evaluate your source by doing an investigation into the academic markers discussed in class: authorship, publisher or journal status, references. What particularly stands out as an important marker of credibility?
SUMMARIZE – What is the hypothesis, how do the authors complete research, and the results that it obtains from that research – this should tell a reader what is unique about this particular source compared to others.
RELEVANCE – how does this source, in particular, match an information need for your particular paper or project.
Classroom instructors may have specific directions for an annotation, for instance if you are not applying it to a research project you might only summarize and evaluate. More information can be found on the Research Writing LibGuide.
