What is SIFT?

How do I use SIFT to evaluate resources?

Answer

The SIFT method was created by Mike Caulfield and is one way to evaluate web and other types of sources. This method focuses on contextualizing the information so that you know better how to ask questions, engage with the material, and use it in your research.

SIFT stands for: Stop and consider what you know about the source. Investigate the source. Find better or other sources. Trace back to the original source to see quotes in their original context.

You can find a more detailed analysis of SIFT written by Caulfield at the link. If you're looking for how to investigate, the PAARC LibGuide has questions and concepts that you can think about in conjunction with the source you are using.
