What are Boolean Operators?
Answer
Boolean operators are used in a search string to help databases and online catalogs better search for terms. Typical Boolean operators used in different research tools are: and, or, and not.
And may be used to connect different terms, Or may be used to connect like terms, and Not excludes the term following it. Examples:
- California AND earthquake regulations
- California AND earthquake (regulations OR code)
- Martin Luther NOT King
Capitalizing Boolean operators is required in Research Central and is good practice for all databases.
