How do I find the permalink for a source?
I'm looking for a permalink or permanent URL for a source - where should I look?
Answer
A permalink or permanent URL for a source will link another person directly back to the citation, abstract, or full-text of an item in an email, bibliography, D2L forum, or other source.
This answer will address three of the most common sources and provide information about where to look and you can always ask a librarian for help with a specific source.
Permanent URLs or permanent links can typically be found near the citation tools, email, save, and other tools you find inside a database. Our main database providers (Research Central, EBSCO, ProQuest, and Gale) all use internal Permanent URLs which are shorter and will link back to the item without errors.
Research Central
Research Central's Permanent URL is found with the citation data. From the main page, if you select the ellipses ... in the right hand corner of the record you will receive the following dialog and you can copy and paste the permalink from here by clicking on the permalink button and copying and pasting the link that is provided.
EBSCO databases
In EBSCO databases the permalink is found in the right had column along with the citation, email, saving, printing, and exporting information. Selecting that button will give you a link to copy and paste into the document you are working on.
Gale databases
Gale Databases will have a 'get link' option in the top bar. Typically the citations provided under 'cite' will also contain the permanent link.
This is a basic over-view of how to find the Permanent URLs in three of the main search tools that you might use as a student at Walla Walla University.
There are a few of our journal providers, ScienceDirect, JSTOR and publishers, that allow you to use the URL from the URL bar. If you have questions about one not covered please feel free to ask a librarian.
